Government & Professional Relations

Welcome to the Government & Professional Relations (GPR) section of the TASP website. TASP represents the interests of the profession during legislative sessions. TASP also networks with other professional organizations to create meaningful cross-disciplinary dialogue about issues affecting school-age children and their families.

The Texas Association of School Psychologists (TASP) is a state affiliate of the National Association of School Psychologists (NASP).

The purposes of TASP as set forth in the Constitution and By-Laws are

  • To advance school psychology as both a science and a profession with the ultimate goal of providing and promoting learning, emotional and social development, and mental health of all children in Texas.
  • To stimulate and advance quality education for all children through the integration of theory into practice.
  • To encourage and provide opportunities for the professional growth of school psychologists and related professions.
  • To inform the public and professional organizations about the services and practice of psychology in the schools.
  • To promote and advance interests and concerns of the membership through a statewide organization.
  • To advance the standards of the profession of school psychology.

Overview of the GPR program

  1. Policy-Making and Review:
The Executive Board is charged with determining TASP's overall policy positions on various legislative and political matters. Every two years, the board will adopt a legislative platform outlining the association's priorities and goals in the upcoming legislative session. Policy analyses and recommendations on policy matters are developed by the GPR committee and discussed with the board for final review.
  2. Legislative Advocacy:
The legislative consultant, president, president-elect, GPR chair, and various members provide legislative representation on behalf of the association.
  3. Grassroots Advocacy:
TASP affiliates and members provide advocacy at the local level. The GPR committee and our Legislative consultant provide assistance and preparation on grassroots activities.
